I'm Pedro, born in Guimarães in 1993, living in Coimbra. I trained as a biomedical engineer (MSc, University of Coimbra, specialising in bioinformatics and medical informatics), then followed the thread I enjoyed most, building software, across health-tech, robotics, research, and eventually the web.

Curiosity pushed me through a lot of different projects: clinical decision-support at Kinetikos Health, EU robotics research, a medical-device venture of my own, and now full-stack and product work at Subvisual, a studio with deep roots in the Web3 space. I helped build tooling for Protocol Labs, most recently led product development on Brazos (aviation safety), and spend a fair amount of time thinking about AI: mostly in the homelab, and increasingly in day-to-day project work. The Kinetikos chapter was hands-on: alongside the web app, I helped build a local server that shipped to patients' homes for an EU H2020 project, with custom Ubuntu provisioning, over-the-air updates, and IoT and Fitbit integrations. Years of running projects mean I'm just as comfortable leading technical projects and teams as building the thing myself.

Starving for knowledge, allergic to doing things by halves. I also co-founded Coimbra.js, the city's JavaScript meetup, because a scene is only as good as the people who keep showing up for it. And, in the in-between: a serious wine obsession, a permaculturist building an automated veggie garden, and since early 2024, a very outnumbered father of twin girls.

How I think

A few things I keep coming back to.

Do it right

Critical thinking over cleverness. I'd rather understand the problem properly and build something honest than ship a shortcut that costs you later.

Lead and build

Years of project and team management taught me to communicate clearly and keep work on track, without ever fully putting the editor down.

Keep learning

Self-taught by temperament. New stack, new domain, new hardware: the joy of learning is most of why I do this at all.

Wine & food

An old and serious love. Portuguese wine: the production, the food it belongs beside, and the obsession. The one rabbit hole I'll happily never climb out of.

Permaculture & the smart garden

I'm building a bio raised-bed veggie garden on permaculture principles, and naturally wiring it up with sensors and automation. The engineer's itch, put to good use. The itch isn't new: back in 2018 I was already planning an internet-connected greenhouse, and wrote a first server and client for it.

Subvisual is a Web3-native studio, so that world is always close by. AI has been creeping into everything: the homelab first, now the day job too.
